BAGHDAD - BABYLON
BAGHDAD - BABYLON

Day 1: BAGHDAD - BABYLON

Meeting in front of the Turkish Airlines counter at Istanbul Airport International Terminal. After completing ticketing and passport procedures, we depart at 01:15 and arrive at Baghdad Airport at 04:15. Following passport and baggage procedures, we board our bus waiting at the airport and head towards Najaf. En route, we visit Babylon, known for the Hanging Gardens—one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built by Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar in the 7th century BC, it was a multi-level garden in the middle of the barren Mesopotamian desert, filled with trees, flowing waters, and diverse plants. After seeing the Ishtar Gate, we proceed to Najaf. Transfer to the hotel and rest. At the designated time, we gather in the hotel lobby and first visit the shrine of Hz. Ali (RA). We then explore Wadi al-Salam (Valley of Peace) Cemetery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s largest cemetery, home to over 6 million graves. This sacred site houses the graves of prophets such as Hud (AS) and Salih (AS), as well as pious individuals and religious scholars who chose to be buried near Hz. Ali. The tombstones, shaped like houses, domes, or miniature mosques, are often decorated with Quranic verses and photos of the deceased. Later, we visit Masjid al-Hannana, where the blessed head of Imam Hussain (RA) was once kept and mournful sounds are said to be heard. Dinner and overnight stay in Najaf.

Day 2: NAJAF - KUFA - MEDAIN

After breakfast at the hotel, we load our belongings into the bus and head to Kufa. In Kufa, we visit the house of Hz. Ali (RA), the mihrab where he was martyred, Kufa Mosque, the maqam of Hani b. Urwah—a companion of Imam Hussain (RA) who fought in the Battles of Jamal and Siffin, the tomb of Muslim ibn Aqil, and Masjid al-Sahla. We then travel to Karbala to visit Imam Hussain (RA) and the 72 martyrs buried with him. Following our visit, we proceed to Medain near Baghdad. Among the companions buried there is Salman al-Farsi (RA), appointed as governor by Caliph Umar (RA), who played a key role in the founding of Kufa. He passed away in Medain in 656 AD. We also visit the graves of Huzayfah ibn al-Yaman, Abdullah ibn Jabir al-Ansari, and Tahir ibn Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (RA). Return to Baghdad. Dinner and overnight stay in Baghdad.

Day 3: BAGHDAD - KAZIMIYAH

After breakfast at the hotel, we begin our visits to the spiritual figures of Baghdad. We visit the shrines of prominent figures from the Qadiri Sufi order: Ma’ruf al-Karkhi, Sirri Saqti, Junayd al-Baghdadi, and Abd al-Qadir al-Gilani. The complex of Abd al-Qadir al-Gilani, restored by TİKA in 2020, includes the original Hanbali madrasah built in 1145. In 1534, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent expanded it with a mosque, tomb, and soup kitchen. A phrase describes him: “Born with love, lived with perfection, and died with perfect love,” with corresponding Abjad values aligning with his birth and death dates (470 AH–561 AH).

We then visit the recently restored complex of Imam Abu Hanifa, one of the greatest scholars of Sunni Islam, located in the Azamiyah district. This site includes a mosque and tomb near the Tigris River. Following this, we visit the tombs of Bishr al-Hafi, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Prophet Joshua (AS), and Bahlool Dana. In Kazimiyah, we visit the shrine of the 7th Shia Imam Musa al-Kazim and the 9th Imam Muhammad al-Taqi. Return to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay in Baghdad.

Day 4: SAMARRA - BAGHDAD

After breakfast and check-out, we depart for Samarra, founded in 836 AD by Abbasid Caliph Al-Mu'tasim as a military and administrative capital. The Grand Mosque of Samarra was once the largest in the Islamic world, accommodating over 10,000 worshipers, with a total area of 38,000 m²—5.5 times the size of Hagia Sophia. Including its courtyard, it spans 150,000 m². Its northern side features the unique Malwiya minaret, resembling ancient Babylonian ziggurats. This spiral ramp tower is 52 meters tall and sits on a square base 33 meters wide and 3 meters high.

Samarra is also famous for the shrines of Imams Ali al-Hadi (AS) and Hasan al-Askari (AS), known collectively as “Al-Askariyyain.” After visiting these sites, we return to Baghdad to explore its historical treasures, including the Al-Mustansiriya Madrasah—built by Abbasid Caliph Al-Mustansir in 1242, and considered the first educational institution to offer teachings in all four Sunni schools of law, as well as Quran, Hadith, and medicine.

We then visit the famous Al-Mutanabbi Street, known for its books and literary atmosphere. Afterward, transfer to Baghdad Airport. Following ticket and passport procedures at the Turkish Airlines counter, we fly to Istanbul at 02:00, arriving at Istanbul Airport at 05:10.
