After seeing the Ishtar Gate, we proceed to Najaf. Transfer to our hotel and rest. At the announced time, gathering in the hotel lobby and visiting the shrine of Imam Ali (ra). We will see Wadi al-Salam (Valley of Peace) Cemetery, one of the sacred places of Najaf and on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which hosts 6 million graves and has been an active burial site for 1,400 years. Spanning 25 km in length and 6 km in width, covering 917 hectares, it is the largest cemetery in the world. It includes the tombs of Prophets Hud (as) and Salih (as), their descendants, saints, scholars, and dignitaries who chose to rest near Imam Ali. The tombs, shaped like houses, domes, or miniature mosques, are adorned with Qur'anic inscriptions and often feature photos of the deceased. We then visit the Al-Hanana Mosque, known for the moan heard from the spot where the blessed head of Imam Hussein (rh) was placed. Dinner and overnight stay at our hotel in Najaf.

Day 2: NAJAF - KUFA - KARBALA - MADAIN

After breakfast at the hotel, we check out and board our bus. We head to the city of Kufa, where we visit the house of Imam Ali (ra), the mihrab where he was martyred, the Kufa Mosque, the maqam of Hani ibn Urwa—a companion of Imam Hussein who participated in the Battles of Jamal and Siffin—, the shrine of Muslim ibn Aqil, and the Sehla Mosque. Among the distinguished companions, Salman al-Farsi played a key role in the founding of Kufa by the order of Caliph Umar (ra) and was appointed governor of Madain. He continued in this position until the end of Uthman's (ra) caliphate and passed away in Madain in 35 AH (656 CE). The complex of Abd al-Qadir al-Gilani, restored by TİKA in 2020, includes the Hanbali Madrasa built in 1145 as its first structure. In 1534, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent expanded the area by constructing a mosque, tomb, and soup kitchen. Gilani’s life is symbolized in the phrase “Born with love, lived with perfection, and died with perfect love,” corresponding numerically via abjad to his birth in 470 AH, a life of 91 years, and death in 561 AH. We then visit the Imam Abu Hanifa Complex, restored by TİKA in 2024. The mosque covers 38,000 m²—5.5 times the size of Hagia Sophia—and reaches up to 150,000 m² including its courtyard. On the northern side of the mosque is the Malwiya Minaret, a massive spiral structure reminiscent of ancient Babylonian ziggurats. This 52-meter-high cone-shaped tower has a square base measuring 33 meters on each side and 3 meters in height. Samarra is also renowned for being home to the Askari Imams—Imam Ali al-Hadi (as) and Imam Hasan al-Askari (as). After completing our visits in Samarra, we return to Baghdad and explore the cultural heritage sites of this ancient city. We visit Al-Mustansiriya Madrasah, built in 1242 by Abbasid Caliph al-Mustansir Billah, regarded as the first institution resembling a university with higher education in all four Islamic schools of jurisprudence, as well as Qur'an, hadith, and medicine.
